Fellowship Opportunities

Through our Research Fellowship program, the Nathanson Centre supports outstanding work in areas related to our purpose while cultivating a dynamic network of scholars, emerging researchers and policymakers.

Graduate Fellowships

The Nathanson Centre offers fellowships to outstanding graduate students at York University whose work is closely connected to our scope of inquiry. In addition to receiving funding, Nathanson Fellows have opportunities to share their work with colleagues, participate in our active scholarly community, build their professional networks and receive support as they prepare for the next stage of their academic careers. Some Nathanson Fellows contribute to projects or activities connected to the Centre and its Research Associates.

Eligibility

Nathanson Centre Graduate Fellowships are available to:

  1. Master’s and doctoral students at York University.
  2. Students whose thesis or dissertation work is of outstanding quality and closely relates to the Centre’s purpose.
  3. Only Canadian citizens/landed immigrants who are also Ontario residents.

Fellowships are typically awarded in the Fall term of the academic year to a small number of exceptional applicants who are already enrolled in a York graduate research program. Students entering graduate studies at York may also apply to be considered for entry-level fellowships.

Selection

The Director of the Nathanson Centre determines the number of fellowships to be awarded each year. In addition to evaluating the merits of each candidate’s record and application, we consider the fit between the applicant’s graduate work and our areas of focus. Decisions are typically made before the start of the academic year and based on the Centre’s current priorities.

How to apply

The application process for Nathanson Centre Graduate Fellowships is detailed in a call for applications that we issue each year in September.

Postdoctoral and Senior Visiting Fellowships

The Nathanson Centre welcomes applications from visiting faculty and policy leaders whose work aligns closely with our areas of focus. Fellowships are awarded to researchers from around the world who are keen to participate in the Centre’s activities and connect with our engaged scholarly community.

Fellows typically join us for a term or an academic year. The Centre provides an office and a research stipend (with the amount determined by the Director). Fellows are encouraged to be on-site at the Centre for most of their tenure. They participate in our collegial activities and present their current work in a seminar at some point during their stay. We award several Visiting Fellowships and Postdoctoral Fellowships annually. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.
