I am a PhD candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, where I also obtained an LL.M. in 2021. In 2016, I earned an LL.M. in International Criminal Law from the University of Turin, Italy, and had significant exposure to other closely related areas; namely: international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

I graduated as a gold medalistin Law (LL.B, Hons) from the School of Law, University of Asmara, Eritrea, in 2008. I then had the opportunity to work in different institutions, where I demonstrated my expertise and acquired practical skills.

For four and a half years, I taught several LL.B. courses at Asmara School of Law. I also worked as an adjunct lecturer at Halhale College of Business and Economics and SMAP Institute. Before joining the School of Law, I was a legal advisor to the National Commission for Higher Education in Eritrea, an institution responsible for administering higher education in the country.

Research

My doctoral research relates to international human rights law and regional human rights systems with a special focus on the implementation of the decisions of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Court). The African Court has been effective in vindicating human rights in the continent and has set landmark jurisprudence on many important issues – including election, freedom of speech, rights of Indigenous peoples, and constitutional amendment. However, States are manifestly reluctant to comply with the Court’s decisions. My research intends to examine the implementation crisis plaguing the African Court.
